When it comes to self storage, one of the first questions most people have is how large a storage unit they need to fit everything they wish to store. At Move It Storage, we have a wide variety of self storage units starting at 5×5 and going to 25×30 storage units, sometimes larger. The information below will give you a much better idea of how much you can fit into a 5×10 storage unit so that, when you’re ready, you can rent the unit that fits your needs perfectly.
What Fits Into a 5×10 Storage Unit?
Most folks are thoroughly surprised by how much stuff they can fit into a 5 x 10 storage unit. Remember that a 5×10 storage unit is also usually 8 feet tall, so it’s often 5x10x8. That gives you 400 cubic feet of storage space (although most don’t use the space at the top, so about 360 cu ft).
What can fit in 360 cubic feet of space? An awful lot! For example, you could fit the contents of a 1-bedroom apartment into a 5×10 storage unit. Considering a large box takes up about 6 cubic feet of space, you could stack 60 large boxes in a 5×10 storage unit. A 4-drawer filing cabinet takes up about 12 cubic feet of space, so you could put 10 of those in your 5 x 10 storage unit. However, we would put fewer so you still have room to open them and access your files.
One of the most important factors to remember when using a storage unit is that stacking things is necessary! You could put everything right on the floor, but you would need more space quickly. Stacking things allows you to take advantage of every bit of space, so it’s highly recommended you pack as many of your things into boxes as possible. (Boxes are extremely easy to stack!)
How Tall is a 5×10 Storage Unit?
As mentioned earlier, a 5 x 10 storage unit typically has walls that are 8 feet tall. That, as mentioned, gives you 400 cubic feet of storage space, of which 360 cubic feet are typically used. The reason for the lower number is that most people don’t stack things all the way to the ceiling in a storage unit, although it is possible with a ladder and a fair amount of caution. As we’ve mentioned, stacking things is the best way to fit as much as possible into a 5×10 storage unit and something most people will need to do.
Climate Controlled Storage – Do You Need It?
A climate controlled storage unit is different from a regular storage unit because it’s kept from freezing and sweltering temperatures. Climate controlled storage units will stay between 55° and 85°F year-round, and the humidity will remain constant. That means anything stored inside will be protected from extreme temperature fluctuations no matter where you live.
Protecting some items from extreme temperatures is often very important, but it depends on the types of things that you will be storing in your unit. For example, if you’re storing typical household goods that are not sensitive to temperature or humidity, climate control storage probably isn’t necessary.
However, it also depends on where you live. In extreme southern states like Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas, the heat can be extreme, and climate controlled storage might be necessary. In most cases, though, only the items below need to be placed in a climate controlled self storage unit.
- Medical supplies.
- Antique furniture
- Wine and beer collections
- Collectibles (Comic books, baseball cards, action figures, Lego, plates, etc.)
- Fine artworks
- Important documents
- Musical instruments
- Photographs
- High-end electronics
- Wood or leather furniture
What Are Drive Up Storage Units?
For some folks, drive up storage units are the ultimate convenience, allowing them to quickly and easily drop off or pick up things in their storage unit. A drive up storage unit can be accessed directly with an automobile or a truck. The garage door entrance is right on the storage facility’s driveway, so you can drive up and start loading or unloading your storage unit immediately. Move it Storage has drive-up storage units at most of our self storage facilities. We also have several other sizes of storage units that are drive-up units as well.
